Snow (Finland)

Snow and deadly accidents

Snow causes many accidents all over the world. People and villages get under snowslides, slip and get injured. Bad visibility and icy roads ,especially during snowstorms cause car accidents. Because of cold weather, some people freeze to death. Alcohol and homelessness increase the number of these deaths. Lapland.jpg

Importance of snow

In Finland snow is part of humans’ life. Snow falls every year and whatever their age, people get to enjoy it. Snow and cold winters have really become a symbol of Finland. So without snow we just could not feel like at home. On vacation families want to go to Lapland, and enjoy the snow and the landscapes. The importance of snow can also be seen while there isn’t any natural snow. The skiing resorts are producing artificial snow to keep open a bit longer.

Snow utilization

There is a lot of snow but people don’t know how to take advantage of snow. During winter 2009-2010, only in Helsinki, over 3 million cubic meters of snow was transported away. Eventually we should and could find a way to do something useful and make it an advantage.
One idea is to store the snow into a little storage near the houses. During hot summers, the cold air from the storage could be cooling the houses through the air conditioning. But that’s just one of the possibilities in the future.

Snow bringing people together

Snow brings people together because, when it´s snowing, the whole towns are paralyzed and everybody must be solidary : the streets become slippery and cars skid into one another, so, people have to help one another . The snow can cause diseases and if your neighbour or your friend can´t go out, you have to help him and to be with him .

Snow and economics aura.jpg

Snow has effects on economics in several ways. For example in Lapland or The Alps it increases tourism. Thanks to snow lots of people get employed as guides, skiing teachers, hotel staff, plowers etc… When it’s snowing some people watch more tv than usually, which also means watching more commercials and that inspires viewers into adding these products to their shopping list. The snowstorms also cause troubles in transportations from abroad.
Small companies suffer from the snow storms. Cold and snow cause troubles with electricity companies or train companies and the shops are deserted by the customers.
