Yläasteella on n. 410 oppilasta ja 30 opettajaa. Koulu peruskorjattiin yhdeksäkymmentäluvun puolivälissä. Työskentelytilat ja välineistö ovat ajanmukaiset ja antavat mahdollisuuden monipuoliseen opetukseen. Tieto- ja viestintälaitteistot mahdollistavat yhteydenpidon ja tiedonkulun koulun ja ympäröivän yhteiskunnan välillä.
Kiuruveden yläaste on omatoimisuutta ja vastuuta korostava yhteisö, jossa oppilailla on mahdollisuus osallistua koulun toimintaan ja kehittää sitä. Koulu opettaa työn kunnioittamiseen, kehittää itsetuntoa sekä kasvattaa vastuuseen itsestä ja muista ihmisistä sekä ympäristöstä. Koulussa on yhteisesti hyväksytyt säännöt, ja siellä vallitsevat luottamukselliset ihmissuhteet. Ne luovat perustan yhteisön viihtyvyydelle ja antavat hyvät edellytykset kasvamiselle ja oppimiselle.
Kasvatuksessa ja opetuksessa painottuvat vastuuntunnon kehittäminen, terveet elämäntavat ja viestintäkasvatus. Koulun omaleimaisuus tulee esille tavanomaisten oppituntien ohella aihekokonaisuuksien, erilaisten projektien ja teemojen, tukioppilas- ja oppilaskuntatoiminnan sekä sisäisen työharjoittelun kautta.
Kiuruveden yläasteen toiminta-ajatus voidaan ilmaista kolmena periaatteena:
1.Koulumme on ympäristöönsä avoimesti suhtautuva ja aktiivinen yhteisö, jossa vallitsevat hyvät ihmissuhteet.
2.Koulumme antaa oppilailleen hyvään yleissivistykseen tarvittavat tiedot ja taidot sekä valmiudet yhteiskunnassa tapahtuviin muutoksiin.
3.Koulumme tukee uutta ja luovaa toimintaa perinteitä ja historiaa kunnioittaen.

My School
What can I tell? It's a great school, with great teachers and great students. Well, if the students ain't so great, at least we're doing our best. We've got many things in our school. To mention a few , we've got "Jaska's bar" where students can hang out at pauses, students who support other students and work as a link between students and teachers, students' union where ordinary students decide about things in our school (not all of them unfortunately), many days with varioust themes that differ from normal school days, and much, much more.
To tell more about these so called "Support students", they are just ordinary students who want to help our school to be better. They've got a training which has qualified them to the job. This all is made by teachers guidance and it's voluntary. "Support students" also organise many of those days with special themes I mentioned above.
This Students' Union is selected from ordinary students by voting. Then this union makes decisions which affects our school. They have earned money and they use it to improve our school. For example, they've got lots of lockers which they rent to students to earn more money.
We've got many clubs,like floorball club and woodwork club, which are provided by school and they're free. I myself haven't been in any of those, but I believe they're really great fun.
The days with special themes can be very different from the normal school work. There are sportdays when you can choose what sports you want to do on that day, Valentine's day, when all pupils gather for dancing and have fun and Christmas festival before Christmas and School ending festival at the end of school. In addition there are the other non-season themes.
In the school, we've got more than just the lockers and Jaska's bar, like all the classes, (all of them with TV and video!), four computer classes where we frequently have lessons. We've also got a school canteen with kitchen that provides us with a free meal every day.
