IB Diploma programme is a rigorous pre-university programme, for students aged between 16 and 19 years, that leads to the final examination. It lasts two years and is recognized by universities world-wide. The programme is administered by the IBO (The International Baccalaureate Organization) which is a non-profit educational foundation based (in 1968) in Switzerland, Geneva. It is a private, non-governmental organization recognized by the Council of Europe and has consultative status with UNESCO (United Nations Educational, Scientific an cultural Organization). IBO is lead by the director general from Geneva and a network of regional offices. IBCA (Curriculum and Assessment Centre) is situated in Cardiff. In each IB school there is an IB faculty which consists of the IB-coordinator and IB teachers for fulfilling the requirements within the IB programme. In the Finnish IB schools the IB programme consists of the three academic years.; preparatory year (pre-DP) and two actual IB years (IB1, IB2). During the preparatory year (Pre –DP year) the students study the Finnish national programme courses in different subjects in order to get a basis for the proper IB studies over the two subsequent years (IB1, IB2). |
