Memmelsdorf Gate
In former times Seehof Palace was the summerhouse of the souvereign bishops of Bamberg. The building is surrounded by a big garden in the style of Rococo. Next to the Palace you can find some ponds with carps in it.

The Palace with its four wings was first built between 1687 and 1696. The order to build it was given by sovereign bishop Marquard Sebastian Schenk von Stauffenberg. That's why the palace ist also named "Marquardsburg". You recognize Seehof Palace because of its four towers, each crowned by a cupola.

Some years later sovereign bishop Lothar Franz von Schönborn gave the order to add the baroque garden construction ( even in the size you can visit it today) with its fountains, wells and a hedge theatre.
A further sovereign bishop, Adam Friedrich von Seinsheim, added a labyrinth, which doesn't exist anymore, water games and more than 400 precious sculptures. The sculptures were made by the court sculptor of Bamberg, Ferdinand Tietz or Dietz.

Later the Palace came into private possession and got neglected until the Free State of Bavaria bought it in 1975. After a big restoration which lasts until the nineties, today you can visit nine rooms inside the Palace. The most wonderful impression is the White Room, which shows a great ceiling picture made by Guiseppe Appiani.
To use the cascades, Free State of Bavaria had to build a new waterpipe which was first used in 1995.
Even parts of the Palace are the rooms of the Orangerie with the Memmelsdorf Gate and the younger greenhouses. This large part is used for orange trees and exotic plants passing the winter. In summer great festivals are celebrated there. In the western part of the Orangerie the Ferdinand-Dietz-Museum is seated since 1997.
