CLIL capitalizes on children’s home and life exposure to English (for example, through new media, TV and travel) and brings this into the school as a resource. CLIL provides additional platforms for children to not only practice English, but also to actively use it as a tool for thinking and learning. As an educational experience CLIL can have a positive impact on children and young people as they build greater self-confidence towards English as their own language, and themselves as communicators: children are rapidly developing a bicultural Finnish and global identity.
Why an integrated pathway?
The Jyväskylä CLIL Cascade sees CLIL as one way of building on the innate capacity, confidence, and attitudes of young children. Creating a local continuum avoids seeds sown early being wasted, and instead strengthens educational investments. The Jyväskylä CLIL Cascade looks forward to seeing the educational harvest from our joint endeavours.
As an educational approach CLIL has been shown to benefit learners and learning. CLIL has been shown to increase critical thinking and in-depth analysis, enhance questioning leading to deeper thinking, deeper learning and understanding through the dual-processing that CLIL requires. The greater support required in CLIL also creates a different learning atmosphere encouraging a more collaborative approach to learning.
