Ivalo Upper Secondary School is maintained by Inari municipality. The school started its activity in 1965.
We have approximately 110 students. At the moment, there are nine groups, three groups of first-year students, three groups of sophomores and three groups of seniors.
A wide range of languages is offered in our school. We study Finnish and Swedish. It is also possible to choose from the three local Sámi languages: Inari Sámi, Skolt Sámi and Northern Sámi. In addition German, French and Russian are studied by some of our students.

Studying at upper secondary school
- One school year is divided into five periods.
- During each period a student will study approximately 5 - 6 courses (5 lessons/week) - some courses last the whole school year, but there are fewer lessons per period.
- One course is approximately 38 hours.
- The last week of each period is an exam week.
- For graduation a student has to pass 75 courses, which will take from 3 to 4 years.
- All the courses are divided into three groups.

Obligatory courses
• Everyone has to pass 45 - 49 obligatory courses: There are 1 - 11 obligatory courses in Finnish, English, Swedish, Maths (ordinary/advanced), Physics, Chemistry, Biology, Geography, Religion/Ethics, Philosophy, History, Arts, Music, IT, P.E., Health and hygiene and Career counselling.
Advanced courses
• Everyone has to pass at least 10 advanced courses. Students themselves choose the subjects that interest them the most.
Applied courses
• A variety of different kinds of courses (our school offers applied courses in Safety, Environment protection, Good Manners, Sophomore Dances, Travel English, Drama, French culture and language etc.).

The matriculation examination
• In their senior year students take the matriculation examination in at least four subjects, Finnish being obligatory.
• Languages: the matriculation examination is divided into two parts: a listening comprehension test and a written test.
• General subjects (e.g. History): students answer 6 - 8 questions on the subject they’ve chosen.
• Maths: students choose 10 sums at the most.
• The results of the matriculation examination are graded from laudatur (exellent) to improbatur (failed).

The Students' Council
In the beginning of each school year new members for the Students' Council will be elected. In our Council, we have two members of each three grades. The Council has meetings once a month, sometimes more often if necessary.
The aims of our Students' Council
• To represent the students of Ivalo Upper Secondary School.
• To promote the interests of the students.
• To create and maintain the school spirit.
• To provide a communication channel between the students and the teachers and other staff members.
• To organize different kinds of events, activities and festivities.
• To take care of students' book orders.
• To take care of school photographing.
• To work as a member of the Union of Finnish Upper Secondary School Students.
