Sámi students' week in Norway

Sámi students' week in Norway

Our school has done co-operative work with Norway's Sámi Upper Secondary and Vocational School in Kautokeino. Norwegian students have been with us in Ivalo last spring and now again it was our turn to visit Norway.

In October we three students travelled to Norway for a week. On the first day we took part in the lessons. In the evening we made pizza at school together with the Norwegian students. On the second day there was a normal school day which we joined in. Later in the evening we played floor ball. On the third day there was an international school day and we danced salsa at school. After school we watched judo training. The fourth day was a voluntary working day. The students were working in different places and the pay they got was sent to the poor people of Brazil. We Finnish students didn’t work but we went to drive around the village with the Norwegian teacher. Later that day we Finnish students made small reindeer bone key rings. In the evening we watched a film at school. On the fifth day we told about Finnish school system. And then our Sámi teacher took us back to Finland by her car.

Winter holiday

We had our winter holiday which began on the fourth of March and it took nine days. Usually the days start to get longer and warmer so we have good time to do different winter activities like cross country and down hill skiing, icefishing and snowmobiling, snowboarding and so on.

In the beginning of the holiday we had quite cold weather (the warmest temperature was about -15 degrees Centigrade), but the last days made the situation a little bit better (about -10 degrees). The first days I was indoors, but in the last days I collected my courage and I skied about 15 kilometres and I was in the forest with my dog to watch when migratory birds are coming to Lapland in case of the bird flu. But now our school has begun.

The matriculation examination

The matriculation examinations are organized in Finland at the time being. The student candidates have to take at least four exams. The exam in mother tongue is obligatory for everyone. The other exams can be chosen between different subjects. The exams are held in spring and autumn. Most of the student candidates divide their exams to the autumn and spring. The exams are held during three weeks. Every week student candidates take the exams on Monday, Wednesday and Friday. If they pass through the exams, they achieve the student's white cap. The exams are very demanding. There are two levels in languages and in maths, intermediate and advanced. There are three exam sections: maths, languages and general. In spring 2006 the general exam (including history, chemistry etc.) was changed to single exams, ie every subject has its own exam.

Norwegian students in Ivalo

In the middle of February our school got 8 students and their teacher from Norway, Kautokeino Upper Secondary and Vocational School for a visit. They came to Ivalo on Wednesday 15th February. First we Finnish and the Norwegians made pizza in Comprehensive School Upper Level and then we went to the youth house to play billiard and have fun. Finally at that evening we watched a horror movie. Next day the Norwegians came to our Upper Secondary School lessons to study some Swedish and history. After the school day we went to the spa and gym in Saariselkä (www.saariselka.fi). On Thursday evening there were Sophomore Dances in the local gym hall. The Norwegian students really liked the dancers' fabulous dresses and fine dances. On Friday the Norwegians visited Ivalo library and on their way back they visited Inari Same Museum Siida.
