We measured decibels in three different places, on three different days and three times a day. The measuring places were Joensuu town center, next to the local shopping center near the marketplace and a bit further from the town in Tervasuo and the measuring days were Monday, Wednesday and Sunday. Measuring times were 8.00 am, 15.00 pm (traffic jam time) and 19.00 pm.
Noise along the bypass (measuring was made at a shopping centre) was caused by bypassing cars and trucks etc. Noise in the town centre was also mostly caused by traffic. At the top of the traffic jam noise was louder. In the marketplace the noise lasted till the evening. Happenings at the marketplace also caused noise.
In Tervasuo, which is a bit away from the town, only a small part of the noise came from the traffic. The noise was caused by rain, birds and wind, for example. In the evenings it was mostly quiet.
So, if you seek silence, don’t move to the town centre or next to the bypass, where there is a lot of noise. The quietest place is in the middle of nowhere where there aren’t even any railroads, mines, gravel pits or roads nearby. Noise level goes down noticeably, when you move a little bit further from the town. Noise level in the outskirts are already a bit more peaceful.
