The students of the class 9f at Pielisjoki school will be engaging in a research project during the spring of 2008. The project consists of researching wastemanagement and recycling. The aim is to conduct this research as much as possible like real professional work. The work is related to 9th grade geography studies and at the same time it makes it part of our objectives involving the internet in education and making it an interactive form of teaching. Once the research material has been collected other students will use the material to done conclusions and process the data.

The research is conducted together with Kontiolahti school in Kontiolahti and Poikola in Juuka. This is how we will get a wider perspective to draw conclusions from the work and possibly to see differences in the communities. During that time the teachers and students will get to know each other and it may create much discussed social networks. All the schools mentioned above have close co-operation with their nearby elementary schools. We have decided to involve the elementary school pupils and their parents (in Joensuu Karsikko, Niinivaara and Iiksenvaara schools). This gives a chance for the younger pupils to get to know the process of doing research. In time the 9F-class students will naturally share the results with the students of the elementary schools.

This year we will have a chance of working internationally as the research will be conducted also in Krems (Austria), Petrozavodsk (Russia) and Falkirk (Scotland).

The questions in the questionnaire have been made by the students themselves. The processing of the results will also be done by the students. The teachers will, of course, help to solve the problems that may occur. The results will be published in the media.

This questionnaire requires a little effort from the students as well as their parents. In time we hope that parents themselves will take effort in this matter. We feel however that the questions are not too hard to answer. We hope for active participation and use of a little time for the students research.
