School regulations

1. How are the children expected to behave?

Pupils are expected
· To behave in a decent way and be polite
· Not to quarrel
· To pay attention to the lesson and not talk to each other
· To respect their teachers and their class mates
· Not to litter
· To play carefully

2. Are there any school rules?
· When they come to school for the first time (class 1), all pupils must have already been vaccinated against normal childhood diseases (mumps, measles, rubella, small pox, etc.)
· Pupils must come to school and leave on time.

3. What happens when children do well at their work?
· They get good marks and the teachers congratulate them and their parents.
· Class 6 pupils (and until a couple of years ago, class 5 pupils as well) who get the highest marks are chosen to bear and escort the Greek Flag at National Holidays.

4. What happens if a child behaves badly?
· The class teacher – or the Headmaster, if the pupil has done something very serious – asks the parent/parents to come to school and discuss the situation.
5. Do they have to wear a school uniform?
· They don’t have to wear a school uniform, but they must be dressed decently. They usually wear trainers and track suits, because they want to feel comfortable when they sit at their desks, play during the break or exercise.

6. How do they address the teachers?
· They address them as “Mr” or “Mrs” plus their first name. They usually call the headmaster “Mr Headmaster”.

7. Do you have a School Council where children lead meetings and discuss what goes on in school?
· There is a council with a “president”, a “secretary” and a “cashier” for each class. The pupils of the class elect it and its duties are collecting money for various reasons or asking the teaching staff to arrange visits and activities. There are School Councils in High School, though, where students discuss and vote on several issues.

8. How long are school holidays?
· Lessons start on September 11th and end on June 15th. That means that summer holidays are from June 16th to September 10th.
There are also shorter holidays:
· October 28th: to honour the Greeks who refused to admit Mussolini’s and Hitler’s troups into the country in 1940 – World War II. It has come to be known as the anniversary of “NO” (“OHI” in Greek). October 26th is also a holiday for the schools in Thessaloniki, because on 26th October 1912 the city was freed from the Turks. A parade takes place.
· November 17th: to honour the uprising at the Polytechnic School of the University of Athens in 1973 against the Dictatorship of April 21st 1967. There are celebrations the previous day.
· Christmas holidays: Schools close on 23rd December and we come back on 8th January.
· January 30th: to honour the Three Holly Fathers, Vasilios, Gregory and Ioannis (John), protector Saints of schools. Pupils go to church.
· Ash Monday: 50 days before Easter, the first day of fast. We call it “Clean Monday”. We fly kites.
· March 25th: in honour of the Greek Revolution of 1821 against the Ottoman Empire. A parade takes place.
· Easter holidays, this year Easter is on 15th April: Friday April the 6th is the last day of lessons and they start again on Monday the 23rd.
· Pentecost: 50 days after Easter, the coming of the Holy Spirit.

9. How long do lessons last? What subjects are studied? How long are breaks?
